SPIRIT PORTRAITS
A many-yeared journey. This ongoing group of work is about atmosphere, and one's spirit and light. It began in 1996 when I began interviewing different artists and friends about their totem animal and then photographed them posing as their animal. The photos and interviews guided me while I painted their "Animal Posture" portrait. I then continued a further interview series with artists about direct spiritual identity. Again, using photos and conversation as reference material, I painted a group of portraits which I called "Numinous Marks and Remarks" (at this point I had interviewed myself two times!). Working without interview now allows grace and intuition to guide me while painting.
Earth and Air
many of these paintings represent ghosts, mysterious spirits residing in earth spaces. the mist as clouds or breath, the dark hues as earthy ground. the orbs are planet like, as we often think of earth’s relationship to the planets in our solar system, and earth’s relationship to the milky way and the entire universe.
